about

Predating SUMUS's foundation, in hindsight LBOC is the first recording that can be labelled as a SUMUS work. The idea was conceived in Geneva in 2011. Dadavistic Orchestra, a collaboration with The Black Dog (corpsflottants.wordpress.com/dadavistic-orchestra/), was invited by the Présences Électroniques festival to play a spatial set on the INA-GRM Acousmonium. Robbert brought one of the Benjolins we 'built' during a workshop by Rob Hordijk, a brilliant designer of modular synths (www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAC347DE38ABA9E8D). The chaotic synth/noisebox was dubbed Lunch Box Of Chaos as it is built into a plastic food container.
Back home, Robbert recorded several improvisations on the Benjolin. Reinier edited the raw material and arranged it into slow moving collages... Robbert provided the ingredients and Reinier turned them into lunch, so to speak. To enhance the lunch theme, LBOC1 starts with a field recording of a food court, Robbert made in Vancouver. The titles were inspired by being close to CERN, only days before they announced news concerning the 'God particle' (Higgs Boson).
